<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Seeing 300 species of birds in Michigan has long been a goal of mine and one that finally seemed within reach at the beginning of this summer. When I returned from school this May my Michigan list stood at 293 and I was able to see this male Eurasian Wigeon on the drive home to bring my list to 294.</div>

Over the next few weeks I was able to add Lark Sparrow, Piping Plover, and Tricolored Heron, bringing my total to 297 at the end of May.<br />

Once June hit, the birding predictably slowed down and the Black-necked Stilt at Shiawassee NWR was my only state bird during the month.</div>

A heard only Western Meadowlark in Berrien county while I was on my way to Indiana finally brought me within one of three hundred. My chance to get to 300 came just four days later when a Glossy Ibis was reported at Pointe Mouillee. Unlike many Ibis there, this one stayed in the same small area for several days, making for an easy chase. Photos proved more difficult, however, since views were usually obstructed by vegetation. Once it flew to a slightly different spot and I was able to get an ok flight shot.</div>

Although there was little else of note at Mouillee on that hot muggy July day I was thrilled to finally reach 300 after 6 years of birding this great state.<br />

My brother has been complaining about my neglect of my blog lately so I figured I should post something. In Late March the Black-tailed Godwit which had showed up at Chincoteague NWR last fall reappeared and was showing much more reliably. One Saturday morning I was able to drive out and see it along with many other shorebirds.</div>

Over the last few weeks just about all of the northern finches have started to push south and they have already reached northern Virginia. Last weekend I saw a flyover Evening Grosbeak and White-winged Crossbill at Kiptopeke State Park at the southern tip of the Delmarva peninsula and this weekend the finches have moved into northern VA in full force. On friday I found a male and female White-winged Crossbill feeding in the Hemlocks at Blandy to go with the flock of Siskins that has been there for a month or so already.</div>

The birders who have come out to look for them this weekend have continued to turn up more finches with several Redpolls and a Red Crossbill reported today. I was able to see one of the Redpolls thanks to Josh Taylor but I haven't been able to find any Red Crossbills yet.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPsLOo-LxVqqsh-8FZVrEvse2MdGzWOs-5Car44gUbQpx0zrUjJ8r8l-92f9O-XYIgo0XNwh5Z3-cMElcjspW57JwXMeqcFTAv2SfxQ88tROeX1w0iK-R0wHq727vqwgZU99tz7dl3pPKL/s1600/DSC_0014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPsLOo-LxVqqsh-8FZVrEvse2MdGzWOs-5Car44gUbQpx0zrUjJ8r8l-92f9O-XYIgo0XNwh5Z3-cMElcjspW57JwXMeqcFTAv2SfxQ88tROeX1w0iK-R0wHq727vqwgZU99tz7dl3pPKL/s320/DSC_0014.JPG" width="320" /></a> <br />

During spring break in early March I had to be in Gary Indiana so I worked in a side trip to a nearby Monk Parakeet colony. Monk Parakeets have been established in the Chicago area for many years now and they are now expanding into Indiana. Like many Monk Parakeet colonies in the Chicago area, this one was at a power station, where the wires help keep the birds' bulky stick nest warm so they can survive the winter. As I was walking around the power station I noticed a group of sticks on the structure and soon I saw two Monk Parakeets looking back at me! They got excited and started calling and soon 8 birds flew off and landed in a tree across the street. I ran back to my car to go after them but then four more birds flew in from the opposite direction! I was able to get a few good shots of them here.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRVx1ctn45pW0wuhzI8ONjZb0KeBtLzIDrc4dpXpJ7SmqnIFrkBU8pFRPivMxp_hrh1OR5aOzVroaKPSjCV6VSEQhABb4V0BBdmwI2w33arzRYN7S94Ps_h7nH-OQWEjCzJQXaVu11Yu51/s400/DSC_0018.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5722484989957251138" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span><div><div>After this, I decided to see if I could relocate the birds that had flown across the street to photograph them in a more natural setting. I almost chased it on Tuesday morning but decided against it when I saw it was not seen later in the day. It was refound on Tuesday and since my only afternoon class was cancelled today I was able to chase it. I found it easily as there were several birders looking at it when I arrived. I got great scope views but it was rather far off so good photos would be difficult. Another birder was generous enough to let me use his 800mm lens, however, so I got some nice photos.</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpgayuG80MvvUC_pkuZnAyyKR4XZSfx4KxaHbXQxDHBHfo69KrjudeC3m6f3AdJrybfrQY24WKLzyhA0W0LBhz4kWk1fy3-qIH3SnDDAEeZYjsZw7rOSC9iN_6YxipxCsnomitZIjaawY6/s1600/DSC_0002.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOXk4NuUvpypLQkErrqVR2jhi4YJEQlrVoJE3vqQnlp-wHsiZ2CyJJwlcW9Ykz2I9giEKgezIeKEaEhHy1JNFnjvrL6lMocX2xUUhxWupbAXNMwcOOKMMDrPEfgCdshmTgQsKWZIWH9Mkf/s400/DSC_0005.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712085908808628162" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpgayuG80MvvUC_pkuZnAyyKR4XZSfx4KxaHbXQxDHBHfo69KrjudeC3m6f3AdJrybfrQY24WKLzyhA0W0LBhz4kWk1fy3-qIH3SnDDAEeZYjsZw7rOSC9iN_6YxipxCsnomitZIjaawY6/s400/DSC_0002.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712085905326264834" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1RSp48OLQrMkaXE9xW3PBpHCJhy7ktYZy_JQpMsDwVpiC-DVJouna7bFbFZBR7sNvEKrn_bn-Of0iWu-QjjxGEMykIGy3-PKfd3GjG0q6AiRQH-OUQ6pI9P6X94fKs3HmY-Uu1qiFPEZp/s400/DSC_0011.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712085917393299938" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span><div><div style="text-align: left;">This Merlin was also a surprise.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwcN0WtBH9Txkl0TYDGIc1tQJPQiCoFXRwkDrtjzQjhcHgT2dOsohLbPV3F7YEigTCLdwqdbAYonTJTLIi9C8-0kDhx_k_fGXkIYAQh7xLfgxFSP5QZtg_6A9zgRDwJetk4YVlB5R_afQh/s400/DSC_0020.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712085919607868706" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 265px; " /></span></div><div><div style="text-align: left;">I cant believe what a great February I have had for birds! We arrived at 7:30 and the small parking lot was already nearly full. Despite the forty or so birders searching, the warbler had not been found yet and we spent the next hour an a half searching without success. Just after we had returned to the spot where most the people were searching after we had tried some other spots I heard a strange chip note in the bushes. When I saw a small grayish bird fly out of the bush a little bit later I knew this was probably the bird. I quickly called everyone over and we soon saw the bright yellow undertail coverts and confirmed that it was indeed the Virginia's Warbler! It quickly flitted from bush to bush for the next fifteen or so minutes before disappearing. I was not able to get any photos but Rob Ostrowski has generously allowed me to use one of his.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/35144142@N04/6898136061/" title="Virginia's Warbler 2012 Feb 18 Pickering Creek by pgbird85, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7070/6898136061_927e1a6a16.jpg" width="500" height="325" alt="Virginia's Warbler 2012 Feb 18 Pickering Creek" /></a>James Foxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12100036220308255001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7562304888530545625.post-4350384387034626622012-02-09T19:22:00.004-05:002012-02-09T19:30:25.538-05:00Greater White-fronted Goose & Trumpeter Swans<div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Helvetica;">This morning I drove up to Sky Meadows State Park to see the Trumpeter Swans and I saw them on the fishing pond.</span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwY486BCjEjb3v-I0W6h6bw5H_9SNNpRqx2_wCd8Nro29ppkCYz3zAj-uXfvkMpoevBD8SEvbA8_aLF32QD-EOUSvXNz7mMS_rDILpWyo9FcnKOEx9jo7iYAS68FDrC-f4CpFspOOf_4pd/s400/DSC_0003.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707296240770139698" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:100%;" >I checked for the Goldeneye on the other pond but didn't see it. In spite of the cold mist for much of the morning we came up with several good birds. The highlight for me was the Lark Sparrow that has been near Stuart's Draft since it was found on a CBC last December.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRLog9UmdV6Ad0TdV-0vfIGmmIc9G4nT_r3h2SbnRPY9jbtBmhP7w1Dm25bjbHIeBUrf131Y8fQCBOdwx1u0kKnqaagx9njMrdUKDCkEF2m_jaOlzpIz8hS8vB-SNy5fBtOC9Y44iaGpdc/s1600/DSC_0014.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRLog9UmdV6Ad0TdV-0vfIGmmIc9G4nT_r3h2SbnRPY9jbtBmhP7w1Dm25bjbHIeBUrf131Y8fQCBOdwx1u0kKnqaagx9njMrdUKDCkEF2m_jaOlzpIz8hS8vB-SNy5fBtOC9Y44iaGpdc/s400/DSC_0014.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5706946648193516594" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaMVb9PuiOLR0sdunI2kGPUAssDn7E5eR-PN0l4GB_ov73iGwRK-9msNIgWC-5cM5udzkUr-yfJXfOR-gMVw7wJ781_ZcfHPu1QU1I1GGt9UgB65wpcZ7IlxdfKzxulv3GnB5MbQQZcd3m/s1600/DSC_0008.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaMVb9PuiOLR0sdunI2kGPUAssDn7E5eR-PN0l4GB_ov73iGwRK-9msNIgWC-5cM5udzkUr-yfJXfOR-gMVw7wJ781_ZcfHPu1QU1I1GGt9UgB65wpcZ7IlxdfKzxulv3GnB5MbQQZcd3m/s400/DSC_0008.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5706946635798545714" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></a><span class="Apple-style-span">This Savannah Sparrow was rather cooperative for a photo as well.</span><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg0eFfJCLOTEGVoEhkJTB1lB7gPYf2Od31FrT871QfR3LOgv24bK1yflh26Jwqm0OVEpjC-2A3gLeB59a7CpCHPHW-Kzr9i0mprLR79VxlBb9vidSgWRVEcOTSl7qKCCKR4Zv54lqFuUep/s400/DSC_0006.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5706946633478052450" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " />After the Lark Sparrow we were able to refind a Rough-legged Hawk nearby and checked several local farm ponds for ducks and saw Shovelers, Gadwall, and a Coot. I also saw my first Red-headed Woodpeckers for the year along Badger Rd. We finished the day off with two Black-crowned Night-herons and an early Brown Thrasher flying across the road. My Virginia list continues to improve, I added seven more birds on this trip and am now at 156. This Loggerhead Shrike I saw on Saturday was also a great bird. It was only a few miles away from Christendom but it took me six tries to see it.<span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZbcnGzT8rYVshuTGFMqr0B9JnmpaGBKB0NLlf6etcWcE5ZCyINor2YXTVk_tCASie4TgPEUp5pKK3Y3aX0ir2QOqgWgeossx3ompbRMyIMVz72Vps18AP9ByT2HZE0SmWPGwJfCZzGyUf/s400/DSC_0006.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5706946653741779362" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span></span>James Foxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12100036220308255001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7562304888530545625.post-24952068736589184142012-01-28T21:05:00.003-05:002012-01-28T21:20:47.025-05:00Townsend's Warbler<div style="text-align: left;">Today I drove up to Pennsylvania to see a Townsend's Warbler (lifer #391) that has been visiting a feeder for the past week or so. Despite scanning the flock several times, we did not find anything else.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgedwWoOCY0FAMUbkmHzg-gCF6LY6KskC2jkuq99fLTL1hmPDFLHJnQ4tDW-D-J4PnyQwX_y9UxWywx73NvgtD0htyFaCC_518JJgy09HKg1o-XYRhW5HiiZuHz3MPqCl3c0uxRRWQauhyphenhyphenu/s400/DSC_0006.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702868407333228610" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000ee;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3qNQkr3-zUHgVduaxsuOoueckoIYM_07iFzHbL45jBQqnCXhNEII3iGUSkZrJAdeBZPHnKmz5A4tULfvvo_g0E0xS6YXK2wtlOHVYu4GS2WeJFJJdN_QM8nJ1A4-e3hteiY-oQKqYJ2pT/s400/DSC_0009.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702868409265973842" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span></span></div><div>After a little bit of scanning the flock of American Wigeons, Pintails, and Black Ducks we were able to pick out at least one male Eurasian Wigeon (lifer #387) with his bright reddish head.</div><div>Our next stop was Cape Henlopen State Park where we saw several Brown-headed Nuthatches (lifer #388) come to the feeders after waiting for several minutes.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDE7olwbxNej2u4VdHS6wGTDyQP4TXvzL7Y8Q5coZHJOo6UI7uXEimb0OqeBNFneI0aq4_DY4QPlXVfeXvn4OyK6V7gNQCNC7V5GcVcFhylritNTWc-pMyLDSs0Rp1er__1OzF5HcMi9x2/s400/DSC_0018.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702868420051866802" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span></div><div><div>A quick scan of the ocean here did not find much so we moved on to the Indian River Inlet. The birding was rather slow at first and the rain didn't help. That all changed, however, when we headed down the scout trail. Ever since Mike found a Long-eared Owl in the pines along this trail last February, I have always been checking for owls in the pines along this trail. As we walked into the pines we noticed some whitewash on the ground! A check of the branches above revealed nothing, however. After checking most of the trees, everybody else began to move back toward the trail but I decided to walk a little further and check the one pine further back. I was thrilled to see a Long-eared Owl looking back at me!</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYFYfIeCjKCO9D6n731nU1l6eV3SR1-WsmWTSpP2HUeEyDlCboc1BNXlmefeCFTPT2y4hZn9CHLMuisE_mOp9Jan9M9Dg4ENq3oT3nxf1HuaiZhRIE8OMwo7J5FiKsFeb1z-UwK2ZJjtlS/s400/DSC_0004.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692837728802550226" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span><div><div>This was the first time I found a perched owl without directions from someone else. A little further down the trail I noticed a kinglet in the bushes. I assumed it would be a Golden-crowned Kinglet since Ruby-crowned Kinglets are extremely rare in the winter in Michigan. The face and wings looked plainer than a Golden-crowned, however, and Mike and I agreed it was a Ruby-crowned. Mike played a Ruby-crowned Kinglet song on his ipod and it popped out of the bushes and spent a minute or so looking at us.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRIz-gZHMVx7pXvk16VV1DuPBTUtRuls5htlAINxhOCHcb-kgoGfXIy6vX42_mXwPorC0-pvevvtf5tRodP5ubXd_gqHTRkjToJ2VgZIMWhEeuMlFGiOXzmZv73nW5LzHgvlR8is9seZkr/s400/DSC_0007.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692837734055344274" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span></div><div><div>A Yellow-rumped Warbler was a nice bird as well.</div><div><br /></div><div>After lunch, I drove over to Walled lake to see the Surf Scoter. When I looked up the location and saw that it was only a little more than an hour away, I started to get really excited. At first I thought I would have to wait until Tuesday but then I realized that it would have time to chase it the morning of Christmas Eve since it was only an hour away. I started calling other birders and eventually arranged to meet Sherrie Duris from Toledo, Ohio at seven the next morning. When we arrived at the spot where the owl had been sighted the day before, things did not look good. There were several birders there but it was obvious they were not seeing anything. We found out that the owl had last been seen at three a.m.! We were just pulling out to start searching nearby roads, when some other birders pulled up and said they had found the owl over by the next road. When we got to where they had seen it they jumped out of the car and said it was still there. It took me a minute or two to see it though, because it was so well camouflaged.<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzL-tSflDaPABsGiBbu7RY4U_1hfYg31NvXijQky2ARc0KwCDrb3XbYLESgjvJUtqTExCLgyspt6eEcEyn20B8THLLgsOzDWNDY1mqxHlVxMdCF7aGZPZaz2izPpk8qLDyzxr0vI8Sz6Se/s400/DSC_0007.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5690633239539707746" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span><div><div>Soon the Great Gray flew towards us and pounced in the grass.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4nWY_Uxjg6qgGTw6TEfJUlxNUPK-ZcHehUyyDTO3DXMmhD5rKE3guYH7Jc-XHeLhpYFitba3J9kNtziFGwscvKmOReRfyyAfDZYia-_in5EOvCsngJEz10EncqRxxWSikri2QIoJ1MQqd/s400/DSC_0020.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5690635294675566690" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000ee;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLpuM5cqWU1iUbV7LvQpX1ujvbI3wD9vKgId6Xqo3FBUieTEW-SLzYgfyqX68rtANarBYcUZwvNq7Tuxuyvk4lrw-5qeslbY12SJpAfEbK3ax-po-wuq1-Ko2YVIO122Z3ZROou-kdTm0P/s400/DSC_0029.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5690635293467792562" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span></span></div><div>After this it landed on a tree right next to the road where we watched it for at least half an hour.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEiYQcEzehCiQma17cnv3OV8u856wRvbvKTsily6kUy8ZLY_0UKEZMa_8LkERlTBtYve7Q_7xc-0agppzfm4XK4l0_BzCPywiSgd26f4fxVUIxZyGqh6XUImzal3ng11-jY2fTnycuKTul/s400/DSC_0068.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5690633241016372178" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000ee;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></span></div><div>By now there was a huge line of at least twenty cars from all the birders looking for the owl.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX748qCkbLEi8GuUidE0XMyUEOtxgggiftgc0EH8WaLjus4EVukZs9SeByGznb4n2BUt_g6h_73LKr7s1tuaokzS5jveI0T7ZL_Jn6dQ0AXNvRujrot9CEfGBibOPLND3IVyFA9Fi5j9SL/s400/DSC_0086.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5690633252130277554" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></span></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000ee;"><br /></span></div><div>After a quick stop in town, we went looking for the Snowy Owl reported nearby. Along state route 2 we saw hundreds of Broad-winged Hawks flying over along with the occasional Northern Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, or Turkey Vulture mixed in. After trying unsuccessfully for the Black-necked Stilt we headed to Metzger to try for the Tricolored Heron. It was right where it had been previously reported, running around in the marsh. The Tricolored Heron was lifer #359 for me.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNmsnKplZiJNxOT8bKAxcA7DHmXQ0MIW2dy2sYY5mNZsLOLfq6DvdpfMiHOhPgbqt-rj29l4lrgV-CsrUVxIlbCiaNf6unftKWLQd4v1rBhCVBDun1b2y3hOiime0REDYpizvmDRL0qJCD/s400/DSC_0016.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600215837545922882" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px; " /></span><div><div>Down by Lake erie there were lots of Bonaparte's Gulls along with Caspian and Forster's Terns.</div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUP7T-Fnl0g7ZG0rwlgdUUPwNy4T1sFkn8ikZxbD6UKvvTTo7FoAYa57DjxNeecV9CI0o80U6VQYo3Vy4cTCIr5uRQgZ_6XnX7iq4ETwHAZWGmaWdg9Y79TKvIPkpG7dT5AKod64c97OFT/s1600/DSC_0030.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUP7T-Fnl0g7ZG0rwlgdUUPwNy4T1sFkn8ikZxbD6UKvvTTo7FoAYa57DjxNeecV9CI0o80U6VQYo3Vy4cTCIr5uRQgZ_6XnX7iq4ETwHAZWGmaWdg9Y79TKvIPkpG7dT5AKod64c97OFT/s400/DSC_0030.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600214979015633010" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px; " /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg78p3c5AIt4g_JoDJc-MvU9-I7NnTHtBcwOxIhqC_ZReijsVy2P0xS592vdrU3w507o0ULVmfvvSUEejzQWTiBQqAPr0ecvzmWkoPR3gKPt46SoXNtKfNTew6Qt_Tb30iLAgk7gO9Yi-1p/s1600/DSC_0029.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg78p3c5AIt4g_JoDJc-MvU9-I7NnTHtBcwOxIhqC_ZReijsVy2P0xS592vdrU3w507o0ULVmfvvSUEejzQWTiBQqAPr0ecvzmWkoPR3gKPt46SoXNtKfNTew6Qt_Tb30iLAgk7gO9Yi-1p/s400/DSC_0029.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600214975597748258" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px; " /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The trees were full of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Yellow-rumped Warblers and Karl spotted a Yellow-throated Warbler.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik7Am1v79X1OtG-dleVy3lP0-jTiIpGw9kGRtjd-2zFPdi8gllpCaoUCy6Rbg0QGLzmo-Yf1V2Q9DvqlRxCF3dwcMKV6nrYaDzpSo4NnwNjcZyK7vqX-A3pAncPqQK2Do-HEqYasJGqlIo/s400/DSC_0031.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600216096355729234" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "></span><div><br /></div><div>After Metzger We headed over through Ottawa to get to Magee Marsh. Incredibly, this is the third state record for Michigan. On the way in from the Mouillee Creek entrance we were pleased to see a Rough-legged hawk flying over the marshes. We reached Cell 3 at about 10:30 and the wagtail had not yet been seen. Within fifteen minutes, however, a birder from Pennsylvania spotted it feeding at the edge of the mudflat near the west dyke of Cell 3. After getting good scope views, we decided to move closer to try to get some pictures. We managed to get somewhat close and I got a few bad pictures.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLHLL34yToOZAlam-wSGfpQAOlTQTGLJTSm-OCeP6szJaHNtjD-eoegS94OAuM9V0hFIabMp3JDrl5m1df5b3_5oXq8ygRjzf6Lcy-cO-4E4xkhSe20NV8OeNgLAx3hDu8_yEOWXJaaNU6/s400/DSC_0059.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5595847788101348946" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px; " /></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#CCCCCC;">Eventually, The Wagtail decided we were too close and flew to the Vermet Unit. As we were biking off, however, we heard a the two note chiz-zick call and the White Wagtail flew back in. I grabbed my brakes and almost went flying over the front of my bike, and we scanned the field for it. Pretty soon, Karl found it in the field and I eventually saw it as well. After a little while it flushed again and appeared to fly back to Cell 3. After biking around the Vermit Unit and finding lots of ducks but nothing unusual, we headed back to the car. On my first scan of the ducks I was pleased to see a White-winged Scoter with the Long-tailed Ducks but I did not see the Harlequin. After scanning the ducks for about fifteen minutes I was just starting to walk further down the river when I saw a small duck flying upstream. I assumed it was another Long-tailed Duck but as soon as I saw two spots on its face I knew it was the Harlequin. Fortunately, it landed within sight and I was able to get nice views through my scope and get a few pictures.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA7HpYb9EXnRrRSBPFy936S35RrrhlzYeJVGd7B3wsGbq1V4njFIVyP8udnXKcO9Of3gUzqZxBNpFjhQgtGVDqYY93cFC9MILBYv3jNKmy0t4LpAqpkCfOe_u4dBs1tQHEVR_0AB3ry5Lw/s400/DSC_0010.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568102083784169106" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px; " /></span><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><br /></span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5vJgUBWYHTxor-91_w-2_i7qf_WmaYyFtYmkzwN7r2gHjQKAu1fUY2MUuhjGsRjlhAjV-c1Egc7LIfnWgFfE5whOqAiuN8-jqGZLn4WbAX6Fnh8kC9ZjMQJHYSYyURXgULa1VRnQRG83f/s400/DSC_0011.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568101682085190514" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div>After I had been watching it for twenty minutes it flew further north out of sight. I was able to convince my dad to take me down there and we arrived at about 1:30 Sunday afternoon. The birders there informed me that the bird had just disappeared behind some private docks. I found out, however, that if I lay in the snow I could see under the docks and see it. I spent the next fifteen or so minutes lying in the snow trying to get pictures and good looks of it but I wasn't having much luck. The birds finally moved out from the dock a bit so I went back to the car to get my scope and left my camera since I figured I couldn't get any good pictures. Naturally the birds moved closer while I was gone so by the time I came back I didn't need my scope and I wanted my camera. After another trip back to the car I was able to get some better photos. I talked to Alan Ryff while I was watching the bird, and we were leaning toward it being a first year female but weren't 100% sure.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx2Uk9zqu0NTJ2tJLEOZnvqWMj_EEqEZoBlA5mqtK0bpAWgNhJnAPlMR1Lu0DvT3Mj-qLgn4mWJSXy56jkI1j2DJW7Qbf87AhSQwC7ZMjGfECvLtV2dlJgDdGxd7bbBPrPm98F2PDc_eOl/s400/DSC_0049.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552735196230327170" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px; " /></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "></span><div>I was happy to get such a great bird for my 300th bird of the year, it was my 353rd lifer as well.</div><div>Besides the King Eider I also saw an Iceland Gull fly by with hundreds of Ring-billed and Herring Gulls. I spent about an hour searching but came up empty although I did hear a Brown Creeper. As I was about to get to my car, however, a huge Pileated Woodpecker flew into a nearby tree. I was surprised to see it begin to eat Poison Ivy berries since I don't usually think of Woodpeckers (with the exception of the Red-bellied) as fruit eaters. I think a nearby Red-bellied Woodpecker wanted the berries as well because he dove at the Pileated several times and was scolding until it flew across the road. The Pileated was my 190th bird in Oakland County this year, according to the lists published by Scott Jennex this was only done once before this year. This has been an above average year for birds in Oakland, however, and I am the third birder to get over 190 this year.</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSeBTC1yYRYj878xbYkTXgLugA6kKoj0XlDpWEeSTFDRz-yJja7iIzTpC-9E4vQzkbNQUp21NASyDD7xp6aeyzUCYB1amqYIfn192jBUd8qmtzGs66qxB2Ox-eRrTJ8fGl4FHX7nqwtIS5/s400/DSC_0051.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5551347736156317330" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px; " /></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#CCCCCC;">I stopped by Carpenter Lake today and found four Song Sparrows south of the dam, this was the first time I have seen them there in the winter.
